FIRST was founded in 1989 to inspire young people's interest and participation in science and technology. Based in Manchester, NH, the 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit public charity designs accessible, innovative programs that motivate young people to pursue education and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math.
FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) features teams of students who will design, build, and program their robots and compete against other teams. The FIRST Robotics Competition was founded in 1989 by Dean Kamen, inventor of the Segway. Students will learn to use problem-solving and organization skills as they work in teams to design, build, and program their robots. The kit, provided by FIRST, is reusable and is programmed using a variety of languages including Java, C++. Students, mentors, coaches, and volunteers will work to build robots using engineering principles, and they’ll do it with six dedicated Brewer community mentors. The students compete in two regional events, and may be eligible for the New England District Champs. There are currently 26 teams in Maine, and growing state-wide. Currently, FIRST has 200 scholarship providers, 3,500 individual scholarships, and $80 million in available scholarships. FIRST estimates 100,000+ high school students on expecting 4,000 teams worldwide for 2020. For more information on FIRST visit http://www.firstinspires.org/robotics/frc |
