The team had a phenomenal time at WPI. The first 2 matches were a little rough but worked all the nerves out and after 12 matches came out of the qualifying round in 3rd place (out of 40). as a 'Final Alliance' captain! The team was asked to join the 2nd place alliance and gladly accepted. Our alliance finished in 3rd place overall in the finals. Natasha's performance was amazing! The team was complimented by judges, volunteers and other teams.
During the awards ceremony the team was given the "Gracious Professionalism Award". This award "Celebrates outstanding sportsmanship and continuous Gracious Professionalism® in the heat of competition, both on and off the playing field." Gracious Professionalism is part of the ethos of FIRST. It's a way of doing things that encourages high-quality work, emphasizes the value of others, and respects individuals and the community.
With Gracious Professionalism, fierce competition and mutual gain are not separate notions. Gracious professionals learn and compete like crazy, but treat one another with respect and kindness in the process. They avoid treating anyone like losers. No chest thumping, tough talk, but no sticky-sweet platitudes either. Knowledge, competition, and empathy are comfortably blended. In the long run, Gracious Professionalism is part of pursuing a meaningful life. One can add to society and enjoy the satisfaction of knowing one has acted with integrity and sensitivity.
A team is nominated for this award by the other teams at the competition. Team 'Orange Chaos' helped a number of teams repair their robot, loaned parts, fabricated parts for other teams, and transported a first year teams robot to competition site. Brewer High School Team "Orange Chaos" and "Natasha" were widely recognized at this competition and represented the school and community very well!

Today we head to Worcester Polytechnic Institute for our first competition of the season. We are sharing the ride with Rookie Team 5122 from Old Town, Maine. Both robots are in the trailer, and almost every tool we might need! Today we will set up the pit area, our robot will be weighed and inspected, and we will have time for some practice matches tonight.
